Christian Symbols in the US Flag By David A. Roach, PM

In the book Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Church Dean Merrill describes the attitudes of
Christians when dealing with a lost world. He does a good job of explaining the trends of the church
about reacting to the lost public in our country. He rightly explains that the greatest weapon we have
is prayer and faith not anger and reactionary politics.
While I agree with the main thrust of his book, I disagree with his assumption that there are no
Christian symbols in the US Flag. These are the symbols that I see in our flag.
Why were the stars placed on a blue background? Why were there 13 stripes, 7 red and 6 white?
There is argument among historians as to who made the first United States Flag. I was taught that it
was Betsey Ross. Just goes to show that given enough time historians can cause doubt to be cast
on even the most accepted truths in history. They've cast doubt on whether or not Washington
chopped down the cherry tree and then proved his integrity by admitting to his father that he did with
the words, "I cannot tell a lie." My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Hail, taught us the importance of honesty
through this example of Washington's integrity. All there has to be now days is one person to
disagree or come up with a statement made by some unknown character from that time to the
contrary regardless of his reputation to dispute the before known facts. There seems to be an
agenda these days that supports the degradation of all of our symbols of integrity and honor. These
attacks on our nation that would destroy the foundations on which it was founded must be answered
and put to an end.
Did you ever wonder why the stars in the flag are five pointed stars? I believe that it's because in
early Christianity the five-pointed star was chosen to depict the five wounds of Christ, in the hands,
feet, and head. I was taught that the blue background was chosen to represent the heavens that
the stars are found in. I have since learned that during that period blue represented the sovereignty
of God who rules the heavens and earth. So a symbol of Christ rests in a symbol for heaven and
the sovereignty of God.
White has been a symbol for purity and innocence from time immemorial. Hence, the color of the
stars and stripes represents those traits. The red in the stripes stands for sacrificial blood. The two
colors for the stripes, red and white, stand for the pure and innocent sacrifice. The paschal lamb
was the most spotless and perfect lamb available for the Passover sacrifice. The Perfect Lamb of
God was the pure and innocent sacrifice for mankind. Christ said that there is no greater love than
that of a man willing to give his life for his friend. The number of stripes all together makes the same
number as the number of states willing to make the sacrifice to form our nation.
The number of stars represents the number of states. All of the states recognized at one time the
common law of God, the ten commandments. The first 13 were undoubtedly Christian states of which
most or all had a Christian state religion. Thus a symbol for Christ was used to number those states.
The encyclopedia that I have says that no one knows why the symbols were chosen to make our
flag. It's possible that in this new age of rebellion against all religion, they have chosen not to know. I
believe that this country has always been a Christian nation, especially in it's beginning. Wouldn't you
expect that they deliberately picked Christian symbols unique to our unique country? I do.
